Sun exposure can add up during ordinary working hours.

A workday lesson in everyday sun exposure

Sun damage isn’t only a beach-day problem.

What a truck driver’s face taught me about UVA exposure

For years, I thought sun damage was mostly a beach-day problem. Then I saw a photograph that made everyday exposure impossible to ignore.

One side of a truck driver’s face told a very different story.

After nearly three decades behind the wheel, American truck driver William “Bill” Edward McElligott showed a dramatic difference between the two sides of his face. The side closest to the truck window had developed deep wrinkles, thickened skin, and visible sun damage.

The case was published in the New England Journal of Medicine as an example of unilateral dermatoheliosis, also known as one-sided photoaging. The image looked almost unreal—but it was a real reminder that daily sun exposure can add up during ordinary working hours.

UVA exposure can happen during the workday

The window beside you can become part of your daily exposure.

As a truck driver, I can spend hours in the same seat with one side of my face exposed to daylight through the window. UVB is strongly associated with sunburn, while UVA penetrates deeper into the skin and contributes to long-term photoaging and DNA damage. Both types are part of the broader skin-cancer risk picture. The truck driver’s case was not a diagnosis of skin cancer—it was a visible example of repeated exposure over time.
